Leading wastewater and water treatment firm Alpheus has won a further 10-year contract with Derby City Council (DCC) for the operation of its wastewater treatment works plant at Pride Park.

Alpheus has worked closely with Derby City Council, global consultancy Arup and the Environment Agency since 1997 to deliver reliable and efficient operations to the Pride Park groundwater treatment plant.

Since Alpheus was appointed as the operation and maintenance contractor, the plant has successfully treated over 5.2 million cubic metres of contaminated groundwater, enabling Pride Park to flourish as the home of Derby County Football Club, Derby Arena and a wide range of retail and business facilities.

The treatment plant currently processes and treats over 100,000 cubic metres of contaminated groundwater each year, protecting the environment while supporting the continued success of Pride Park.

During its tenure, Alpheus has supported Derby City Council in achieving an 80 per cent reduction in analytical costs through an evidence-based reduction in sampling requirements agreed with the Environment Agency, an 80 per cent reduction in bulk chemical costs through process optimisation, and a 25 per cent reduction in energy use by adjusting treatment equipment and abstraction pumps.

Under the renewed agreement, Alpheus will continue to operate and maintain the groundwater treatment plant, carry out scheduled inspections and servicing, deliver remedial works and asset upgrades, and provide environmental monitoring of abstraction wells and treated discharge.

Chris Deadman, Managing Director at Alpheus, said: “This long-term renewal is testament to our successful partnership with Derby City Council and our team’s commitment to delivering safe, sustainable, and cost-effective water treatment services. We are proud of the role we play in supporting Pride Park’s continued growth while protecting the River Derwent and the wider environment.”

Councillor Kathy Kozlowski, Cabinet Member for Governance and Finance at Derby City Council, said: Pride Park has transformed into one of Derby’s most important destinations, and the effective management of its groundwater is an important part of that success. We are pleased to extend our partnership with Alpheus, whose expertise and dependability give us great confidence in the long-term sustainability of this vital site.”

Before the 96-hectar Derby site underwent its significant regeneration programme in the 1990s, between 1940 and 1980, it housed the city’s former gas works, a municipal landfill, a British Rail locomotive depot, and a former industrial works and gravel extraction.
