Derby TGI Fridays closes - full list of 35 restaurants shuttered in 'rescue deal'
TGI Fridays is a casual dining restaurant chain serving American themed food and drink from its Derby city location at Derbion shopping centre
TGI Fridays in Derby city centre is now closed.
The Derbion branch is one of 35 that has been shuttered yesterday (Monday, October 7, 2024).
Over 1,000 TGI Fridays’ staff from restaurants across the UK have been made redundant, despite a rescue deal from D&D London, owners of the restaurant group.
They have purchased the UK operator of the US-themed restaurant chain, after its owner entered administration last month.
The rescue deal is thought to have safeguarded 2,400 jobs over 51 restaurants.
Administrators Teneo said 35 branches have been closed ‘with immediate effect’.
It is thought TGI Fridays UK is working with landlords on a deal to save closed restaurants.
Breal and Calveton finalised the deal on Monday after TGI Fridays' UK owner Hostmore fell into administration owing to debt.
Changing consumer lifestyles - a preference for healthier food - and TGI Fridays reluctance to adapt is thought to be one of the reasons for business failure.
Chief Executive Julie McEwan said: “We are doing everything possible to retain our team and support those impacted.
“We are devastated for our colleagues who will be leaving TGIs and thank them for their loyalty and contribution during their time with us."
Buyers Breal Capital and Calveton UK are seasoned hospitality operators.
They own restaurant chains Vinoteca, Byron Burgers and restaurant group D&D London.
Commenting on the TGI Fridays UK acquisition, a spokesperson for the new owners said ‘modernisation of the business’ was on the cards.

TGI Fridays opened its first UK restaurant in Covent Garden in 1985, after gaining a successful following at its debut New York restaurant in 1965.

According to Google, the Derby branch of TGI Fridays is still showing as open. However when DerbyWorld called the TGI Fridays number, a recorded message informed said: ‘This restaurant is now closed. To find your nearest TGI Fridays please visit www.tgifridays.co.uk. We look forward to seeing you soon.’
DerbyWorld has made several attempts to contact Derbion, where the restaurant is based, requesting more information about the closure. We will update this article when information is supplied to us.
