Derby village pub to reopen following abrupt closure - new opening date announced
An opening date is set for later this month
A Derby village pub is set to reopen in the coming weeks following an abrupt closure in May 2025.
The Abbey Pub in Darley Abbey is a heritage-rich, Grade II listed building which dates back to the 16th century.
It was shut down after a note pinned on the door cited the reason for closure being ‘due to someone posting pictures of the Abbey on social media’.
The pub is gearing up to open on June 20, 2025.
Maria and Martin are new landlords who will be at the helm.
Martin Repton is a councillor at Derby City Council.
He told the BBC the landlords are “excited and determined to make sure that it works for everybody concerned, the local community and wider, and indeed Sam Smith's Brewery."
Mr Repton went on to say that he had been in touch with the new managers who are an experienced, well known couple who are locals who live in the area.
Mr Repton said: “It's absolutely superb news after its shock closure only a few weeks ago."
Samuel Smith's Brewery has approximately 200 pubs across the country.
Its stringent rules have been put in place by its owner Humphrey Smith.
These rules are no cameras, no swearing, no children and no pets.
Prior to the pub relaunching in September 2024, it was closed for five years.
Mr Repton is a staunch supporter of the pub, being a principal figure in backing a campaign to reopen the pub.
As reported by BBC, Mr Repton said: ""We're absolutely relieved and delighted and can't wait for June 20 to come. I'll certainly be there on the Friday night enjoying a pint."
