Devonshire Spa announces shock closure: Iconic Derbyshire retreat to close due to 'economic difficulties'
Devonshire Spa, renowned for its luxury wellness experience, is closing due to challenging economic conditions, ending its era as a key player in the wellness and tourism industry.
The Devonshire Spa, a well-known wellness retreat housed in the historic Grade II-listed Devonshire Dome, has announced its closure.
The Derbyshire spa will shut its doors on March 31, 2025, citing economic difficulties as the reason for its demise.
In a statement released on Tuesday, March 25, the spa expressed regret over the closure: “Unfortunately, due to the challenging economic environment, the Devonshire Spa will be closed from the 31st March 2025. We are sorry to be closing and would like to thank all our customers past and present. If you have unused vouchers or credit with us, please do contact us on 01298 338408 as soon as possible, to allow us to process these accordingly. Once again, thank you for your custom and loyalty over the years.”
The closure marks the end of an era for a spa that not only provided a luxury wellness experience but also played a key role in training future spa professionals through University of Derby courses.
The underground spa, known for its state-of-the-art facilities, featured an aromatherapy room, hydrotherapy pool, sauna, steam room, ice fountain, monsoon shower, and reflexology foot baths—offering guests a full-body rejuvenation experience.
Its reputation reached international heights when it was named Rural Wellness Retreat of the Year by Luxury Travel Guide in 2018. The year before, it was recognised as the best ‘Luxury Emerging Spa’ in Northern Europe at the World Luxury Spa Awards, reinforcing its status as a premier destination for relaxation and therapy.
The spa’s closure is a significant loss to the local wellness and tourism industry, leaving behind a legacy of excellence in spa treatments and education.
Customers with outstanding vouchers or credits are urged to reach out before the final closure date.
