This is the best time to visit Derby - one season ruled out according to AI

Discover why AI suggests visiting Derby in these three seasons for the best experience and memorable trips.

As Derby enjoys glorious sunshine and we look forward to basking in the sun, we realise the summer is one of our favourite seasons - ever.

From visiting local delis to top up the larder - we can heartily recommend Milk & Honey, by the way - and enjoying Bluebell Dairy’s ice cream parlour - some places to visit can be enjoyed more depending on the season.

When is the best time to visit Derby, according to AI

AI does not appear to be a fan of winter saying: ‘Winters are cold and damp, with average highs around 6° in January. Overall, late spring to early autumn offers the best combination of pleasant weather and vibrant events in Derby.’

AI says the best time to visit Derby is from late spring to early autumn (May to September) as the weather is mild and the city's parks and outdoor attractions can be fully enjoyed.

AI says spring, where flowers are in bloom and outdoor places can be enjoyed, is an ideal time for park visits.

This spring is an even better time to visit Derby, as the city opens two venues.

Vaillant Live entertainment venue opened April 6, 2025, and the £35.1m Derby Market Hall is set to open on Saturday, May 2024.

AI says summer is the peak tourist season offering double-digit temperatures. Last year Derby basked in a mini-heatwave in July, so this could be a good time to look at outdoor activities and festivals such as Darley Park Concert and Darley Park Weekender.

Derby and wider Derbyshire is also the gateway to the nearby Peak District which is also glorious for day trips out. Just don’t forget to stay hydrated and pack sunscreen.

AI appreciates the drop-off in temperatures, so if you prefer the cooler climate of autumn, hanging out in Derby in September time could be for you.

Things to do in Derby in the autumn months include the Deka Fitness Challenge on September 6-7, and the Edge-Lit literary festival on September 20.

Plus autumn is also an ace time for countryside strolls and enjoying burnished orange leaves on pretty walks.

Winters may be chilly, so if enjoying the toasty indoors is your thing, visit Derby in December. We have an excellent local theatre which puts on a fabulous festive show every Christmas. This year is no different, with audiences set to be delighted by the iconic Oliver Twist.
