Calke Abbey, near Ticknall, has gained a reputation as the house where “time stood still.” Unlike other polished estates, Calke proudly shows off its peeling paint, faded furniture, and untouched history. Visitors love the raw, authentic feel — plus the ancient parkland, walled gardens, and the legendary 1,200-year-old oak known as the “Old Man of Calke.”

Chatsworth House
Over in the Peak District, Chatsworth House remains one of the country’s most popular stately homes. Known for its lavish interiors, sprawling gardens, and impressive art collections, it continues to draw praise for offering a full, high-quality visitor experience — with history, culture, and plenty of cake stops along the way.

Both attractions scored well for their historic atmosphere, facilities, and value for money. Calke offers a more rustic, romantic charm, while Chatsworth delivers grandeur and family-friendly activities on a bigger scale.
