Why isn’t Derby on the prestigious ‘Top 100 Indian Restaurant’ list?

The British Indian Good Food Guide released its annual listing of 100 top Indian restaurants.

Listings such as this are a real celebration of the hard work undertaken by restaurants across the country.

It is heartening to see a spotlight being shone on the hospitality industry that continues to weather challenges including a tough economic climate and a budget that could crystalise pub closure fears in the coming months.

I read the listing with great interest and as I expected to stop the scroll - the moment never came right till the end - I realised Derby did not appear on the list.

I appreciate not every amazing restaurant can be included in the top 100 listing.

However, Derby not having a single entry feels a little odd.

Off the top of my head, I can name over a dozen Indian restaurants that serve top curries in Derby.

Step off the train at Derby and there are some excellent curry houses a few minutes’ walk away from the train station.

I have personally dined at, and loved the food served at Shalimar Gold and Viceroy on Midland Road.

Tarka, also on Midland Road, has some top Derby celebrity fans including Sandy Ryan who told me during an interview, that Tarka is her favourite restaurant post-fight.

Around the corner is the fabulous Lapsi Spice serving Nepalese and IndoChinese food.

A few doors down is Anoki, a restaurant that serves some of the best starters in the country.

Across the way, on the opposite side of London Road is Chennai Dosa that serves giant dosas.

In the heart of the city centre is Derby’s newest Indian restaurant, House Boat, which we reviewed last year and continue to frequent.

Our great city is packed with top Indian restaurants are on par with Michelin-starred eateries in the capital.

Nalaas is one of my go-to restaurants for theatrical sized dosas (seriously, they are bigger than my head) and fiery biryanis.

Meanwhile The Apple Tree Bar & Grill in Derby suburb Spondon continues to hold me in thrall with their offering of fiery garlic chilli chicken curries that are quite possibly some of the best in the region.

To Derby curry houses, fear not, I have your back.

Here is a list of top Indian restaurants (in alphabetical order) in Derby.
