The Japanese restaurant near Derby offering tasty sushi and perfect bento boxes

Shokudo near Derby is putting the spotlight on authentic Japanese cuisine with perfect bento boxes and sushi

An independent restaurant near Derby is serving up authentic Japanese dishes which include perfect bento boxes and glistening sushi.

Shokudo on Bird Street, Lichfield is 40 minutes away from Derby city centre and a 25-mile journey by car.

The self-titled sushi restaurant and Japanese kitchen is loud and proud of their ‘skilled sushi chefs who meticulously craft sushi rolls with precision and passion’.

I had not heard of the restaurant before, but if I had known Lichfield had a brilliant restaurant like Shokudo, I would have visited Lichfield much, much sooner.

My first trip to Lichfield was a proper humdinger, an extraordinary dining experience that I cannot wait to repeat.

I am a giant fan of soft shell crab which is what I started my lunch with.

Crab was tender with a slight chew. But it was the light-as-a-cloud tempura that was a standout component. It honestly felt as if I was chowing down on a cloud. Fluffy tempura batter was gorgeously aerated, breaking into pleasing shards, ready to disintegrate in seconds, in my mouth.

I was really cold so ordering miso soup was on my radar.

However I was also craving sushi and I noted the bento box came with both components, which is what my main plate ended up being.

Chicken karaage bento was jam packed with crispy nuggets in a well seasoned batter.

Punchy miso soup was hot and had a good amount of wakame.

I loved the salmon nigiri, which made me feel healthy yet full.

Dining partner had salmon poke bowl which was filled with freshly sliced creamy avocado, salmon cubes, sweet mango and edamame.

If you’re unfamiliar with Lichfield then now is the time to familiarise yourself with this quaint cathedral city and visit Shokudo, a destination restaurant.
