The time Oasis performed at Nottingham's Rock City and tickets cost less than a chippy tea

Nottingham’s iconic Rock City has hosted some iconic bands over the years, from Irish punk group The Pogues to grunge legends Nirvana.

The venue was opened in 1980 and has grown to become one of the country’s top alternative music venues.

The 2,000-capacity venue is set to host dozens more indie acts in 2025.

For better or worse, the UK’s music scene has changed dramatically over Rock City’s 44-year history.

One noticeable difference is, of course, ticket prices. Those in attendance at Rock City’s first gig, The Undertones, paid just £3 for the privilege.

Memories that Live Forever

Fast forward 14 years, to 1994, and by that point the cost of attending a gig at Rock City had doubled.

But still, £6 to see the legendary Oasis isn’t bad, is it?

On August 15, 1994, the Gallagher brothers rolled into Nottingham as part of the Definitely Maybe tour’s UK leg.

With just two weeks to go until the release of their highly-anticipated debut album, Oasis were the most talked about band in the country when they took to the Rock City stage.

Oasis’s 11-song setlist that night included hits such as Cigarettes and Alcohol, Live Forever and Shakermaker.

A cover of The Beatles’ I Am the Walrus was thrown in for good measure.

Definitely Maybe would go on to sell 8.5 million records worldwide, becoming the quickest-selling debut album in UK chart history.

Oasis returned to Nottingham in 2002, this time playing the much larger National Ice Centre.
