With this in mind, outdoor experts have researched the UK’s most family-friendly trails.

Millets looked at factors including terrain, gradient and available resources to reveal the areas with the most accessible walks for families.

An ‘accessible walk’ is suitable for people with mobility issues including those using wheelchairs, mobility scooters, walking aids and families who have prams or younger children.

The Peak District’s Damflask Reservoir Circular was named in the top three most family-friendly trails in the UK.

It was beaten by Lochore Meadows Circular in Fife which came first and Silverknowes Esplanade in Edinburgh which came second.

Damflask Reservoir Circular, based 90-minutes away from Derby city centre, garnered an overall accessibility score of 8.56 out of 10.

It came joint third with Strathclyde Loch Circular.

Millets say the trail has a steeper elevation gain compared to other entries.

However, the Damflask Reservoir Circular is graded ‘easy’ for accessibility on AllTrails.

According to Yorkshire Water, the route follows pathways that are well surfaced with short sections of roads and pavements.

The mainly flat route which has no gates, stiles or steps, includes gentle slopes with stretches which some may find a little steeper.

It is a popular walk spanning approximately 4 miles, taking walkers around Damflask Reservoir in the Peak District.

The easy trail - it takes just two hours to finish - means it is an excellent journey for families with young children and wheelchair users.

Millets also teamed up with Sense.

A spokesperson from the national disability charity said: “Making outdoor areas accessible ensures that everyone has equal opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.

“Improving access to nature and outdoor activities for disabled people can increase physical activity levels, reduce stress, improve self-esteem and provide opportunities for social connectedness.

“When planning an accessible outdoor activity, it’s important to think about the physical and sensory needs of everyone in your group, and how that relates to pathways, wayfinding systems, and amenities such as changing places and toilets.

“If you’re going on a walk, we recommend checking first that paths are safe and wide enough for wheelchairs, and thinking about how people will get to the start point and home again.

“Sense has created a guide on how to make walks more accessible which can be found here.”
