Derby local elections: Everything you need to know as residents head to polls

Will you be voting in the local elections?

On Thursday, local elections will take place across the UK.

51 seats will be up for grabs on Derby City Council.

Georgia Gilholy has put together this guide of everything you need to know.

Who currently controls Derby City Council?

As of September 2021, the council was under no overall control, with the Conservatives being the largest single party with 18 seats to Labour’s 16, the Liberal Democrats' eight, Reform’s six and three councillors sitting as independents

The number of wards in Derby will increase from 17 to 18 and all but three wards will be represented by three councillors.

Chaddesden East, Chaddesden North and Chaddesden West only elect two councillors each due to their smaller size.

This means the election could be a tightly contested one, with both main parties vying for control over key local issues such as housing, transportation, waste management and council taxes.

Do I need an ID to vote?

Yes, you will need a valid ID to vote on Thursday.

The May 4 local elections will be the first-ever elections in England where all voters will be required to show photo identification before casting their ballot.

What ID can I take to the polling station?

Valid forms of identification include passports, driving licenses, bus passes, cards with the PASS hologram, biometric immigration documents or a national identity card issued by a country in the European Economic Area (EEA) or European Union (EU).

Expired photo IDs will be accepted by polling station volunteers if your appearance and name are the same as those on the document.

Is it too late to register to vote?

It is now too late to register to vote in Thursday’s local elections. The deadline to register in England was April 17.
