Green-fingered Derby woman hailed in B&Q Gardener of the Year contest

Her garden has come a long way in the past few years

A Derby woman has won a cash prize in this year's B&Q Gardener of the Year competition.

Liena Legzdina was awarded runner-up in the contest, coming top in the Best Foodie Garden category and winning £1,000.

She stood out in this category as she is determined to use every inch of her kitchen garden to grow produce and plants.

Liena has been transforming her blooming amazing garden since December last year.

Having a wildlife pond, dead hedge, stone habitat and an in-built hedgehog house also ensures that nature and wildlife can thrive in Liena's garden.

Her children also love to pick the multitude of fresh fruit and vegetables she grows.

This year's competition judges, including celebrity maître d’ Fred Sirieix, B&Q outdoor category director Steve Guy, and award-winning garden designers Matt Childs and Humaira Ikram, were particularly impressed by the design of the garden and the varied array of plants which complemented her kitchen garden.

The quality of the fruit and vegetables produced also had the judges hungry.

Liena said: "I'm very proud of my kitchen garden - a food forest in the making - which provides my family with fresh fruit and vegetables no matter the season which is why I'm so thrilled to have won in this category.

"I love seeing my children grow into foodies and understand how food is grown and to also explore and learn the ecosystem of the garden.

"My garden has come a long way in the past few years and I'm excited to continue to watch it grow and invest in it further using the prize money."

Liena plans to use her £1,000 prize money to improve her garden and invest in new tools.
