I visited Doughnotts in Derby and it was such a jammy delight

There are three things I hate in this world: racism, taxes, and paedophiles (well, the scourge of criminality in general). Pushing at a close fourth is a poor quality doughnut. Fortunately I encountered none of these things on my recent trip to Derby.

Indeed I was more than satisfied to stumble across the newly opened Doughnotts store inside the Derbion.

Doughnotts started as a venture between Wade Smith and Megan Scadden way back in 2015 - with just 10 quid and a wok in mum’s kitchen. And now they boast stores throughout Nottingham and Derby including a micro-bakery.

All the doughnuts are handmade and delightfully fresh - they’ve even got vegan doughnuts!

The shelves boasted all manner of mouthwatering treats to tickle all sorts of taste buds - from big names such as Biscoff and Bueno to your traditional glazed doughnut. My mouth was sufficiently smacked by the lure of a monstrous jam doughnut and a beastly cookie monster.

£6 for the two seemed a decent deal but in hindsight I was oblivious to the sign which very clearly said ‘3 for £7’ - oh what a fool I am. These were big doughnuts, though: not quite as big as my head (I have quite a large face) but definitely bigger than that of a large domestic cat or a small child.

I tried the jammy delight first and, boy, a delight it certainly was. The dough was soft and sweet and the hearty dollop of jam in the centre was the perfect size. A black Americano from Bear paired perfectly to help wash down the generous dusting of icing sugar but this was undoubtedly one of the best doughnuts I’ve ever had.

The cookie monster - which had vanilla fudge frosting and a chocolate digestive crumb - was equally delicious but I had to save half of it for the train journey back as I was absolutely stuffed.

This certainly had a real crumble - and not a stale one, either, like you get with other doughnut chains. I heartily recommend.

You could say Doughnotts dough-nott compare to any other: absolutely exquisite.
