Nottinghamshire ‘ghost station’ is officially the UK’s quietest train station for 2025 - used by 68 passengers

Just two trains a day stop at the station

A Nottinghamshire train station that was used by less than 100 passengers over the past year has been named as the quietest in the UK for 2025.

According to figures recently released by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR), Elton and Orston station had just 68 entries and exits in 2024/25.

The rural station, located between Bingham and Bottesford, is served by just two trains each day.

Besides its two daily EMR services - the 7.04am to Nottingham and 5.12pm to Skegness - the station is not served by any other trains.

This year’s figures show that Elton and Orston’s passenger numbers fell from 212 in 2023/24.

Elton and Orston takes the quietest station crown from Denton in Greater Manchester, which experienced just 54 entries and exits last year.

Besides a small shelter for its few passengers, Elton and Orston has no facilities such as toilets or ticket machines.

The fresh statistics once again show that London Liverpool Street is the UK’s busiest station, with 98 million entries and exits in the year to March 2025.

Why is Elton and Orston so quiet?

The station’s rural location goes some way to explaining its lack of passengers.

Elton and Orston’s two nearest villages, Bottesford and Aslockton, also have train stations.

The station, originally named Elton, opened in 1850.

In the 1840s 'Railway Mania' saw a frenzy of investment into the UK’s rail network as technology rapidly developed.

Elton was ultimately one of the hundreds of village stations across the UK to benefit from this investment.

The station’s passenger numbers have gradually declined over the 20th and 21st centuries, so much so that it experienced just 12 entries and exits in 2020/21.
