Pictures show new Derby Starbucks drive-thru taking shape

Local Democracy Reporter Nigel Slater reports an opening date for the new Starbucks is yet to be revealed

A new Starbucks drive-thru store is taking shape as work continues to create a new retail park in Derby.

Pictures taken by the Local Democracy Reporting Service shows the construction of the new Starbucks branch in Normanton appearing to be at an advanced stage with signs installed on the building.

The site, known as College Park, is off Normanton Road next to the area’s Aldi supermarket, close to where the former Mill Hill Corner bed shop used to stand.

Another building appears to be under construction next to the Starbucks store.

This is likely to be the new Wendy’s drive-thru restaurant, which will be the first branch to open in Derby and Derbyshire.

Planning permission for both retail units was approved in November last year by Derby City Council’s planning officers.

A further application calling for permission to build a Dunkin Donuts store at the same site is currently under consideration by the local authority.

An opening date for the new Starbucks is yet to be revealed but the construction of the building appears to be near completion.

The drive-thru lanes and car park will be next on the list.

The development is being created by Burney Estates Ltd which builds retail premises across the UK.

During the planning stages, the developer said: “Construction of these modern, well-designed units in a very accessible location will help boost the local economy by creating employment as well as enhancing the built quality of the area.”

Derby City Council agreed and gave the development the go-ahead.

A decision notice from the authority states: “The proposal is considered to be acceptable in principle.

“Although the layout is largely functional, it would open up the site and revitalise the visual character of the surrounding area.”
