Tributes paid to ex-BBC Radio Derby presenter Michael Carey after River Derwent tragedy

Condolences have been offered to his loved ones

An 87-year-old man died after he was rescued from the River Derwent at Darley Abbey Mills over the weekend.

Derbyshire Constabulary said Michael Carey, who was from the local area, was taken to hospital after being rescued from the water but he sadly died shortly after.

Mr Carey was a former BBC Radio Derby presenter, the corporation has confirmed.

He hosted a programme called Memorable Melodies for the station for nearly 20 years before stepping down in 2019.

Aftab Gulzar, executive editor at BBC Radio Derby, said Mr Carey - who was known as Mike - had an "incredible life".

In addition to being a radio presenter, Mr Carey was an author and worked as a national cricket correspondent.

Mr Gulzar praised Mr Carey's work ethic, describing him as a "constant professional" when preparing his show.

He added: "He was a reserved man but if you got him on to some subjects like music, cricket or his dogs, then you'd be there chewing the fat for some time."

A police spokesperson said their thoughts were with Mr Carey's family and added: "Officers are continuing to carry our enquiries into the circumstances around how he got into the water.

"We would like to hear from anyone who may have been in the area alongside the River Derwent in Darley Abbey between 8.30am and 9.20am."
