What happened to the last Derby County side to beat Crewe Alexandra away from home

This weekend, Derby County face League Two outfit Crewe Alexandra in an FA Cup clash which will begin their campagin for this season.
Last season, the Rams reached round four of the competition where they fell to Premier League West Ham 2-0.

Hide AdPaul Warne’s side will make the fairly short trip to Crewe on Sunday 5 November.
The last time that a Derby side beat Crewe away from home was in 2005 when both teams met in the Championship. The Rams won 2-1 in a season where they finished fourth making the playoffs, although they did not achieve promotion.
Here is what the players in that Derby starting XI are doing now:
Goalkeeper: Lee Camp


Lee Camp started what would become somewhat of a journeyman career with Derby. He made 89 appearances for the Rams before leaving for Queen’s Park Rangers in 2007.

Hide AdCamp would go on to play for a number of teams including Bournemouth, Rotherham and Birmingham. But his most successful spell was ironically with Derby’s rivals Nottingham Forest.
He played over 160 games for Forest between 2009 and 2013.
Most recently, he joined Wrexham in 2022 on a short term deal but never played a game.
The goalkeeper then ended a career with over 550 appearances and is now a development coach at Accrington Stanley, he hopes to go into coaching and management in the future.
Defender: Jeff Kenna


Jeff Kenna played much of his career in the Premier League for the likes of Blackburn Rovers, Southampton and Birmingham City.

Hide AdHe joined the Rams from Birmingham in 2004 and made 65 appearances. Kenna was appointed Rams captain in 2005 and remained as skipper until he left in 2006.
As he played for Kidderminster in 2007, who made the EFL Trophy final, Kenna became the first player to play at both the old and the new Wembley Stadium.
Defender: Chris Makin


Chris Makin was only on loan at Pride Park and so only made 13 appearances for the Rams. He’s best known for his spell at Sunderland between 1997 and 2001 where he made over 120 appearances for the Black Cats.
Makin has also played for Marseille, Ipswich, Leicester City and Southampton. He retired in April 2008 after a doctor advised him to due to a hip injury that prevented him from playing since September 2007. Makin is now a commentator mainly working on international games such as New Zealand’s World Cup Qualifiers.

Hide AdDefender: Michael Johnson


Michael Johnson is still very much involved with the Rams as he is a club ambassador of Derby County. The former centre-back played over 135 games for Derby over a five year span. He began his career at Notts County where he also ended his career in 2009. Johnson also had spells for Birmingham City and Sheffield Wednesday.
Midfielder: Morten Bisgaard


Morten Bisgaard had quite the career, playing all over Europe and for his country, he was a quality midfielder.
The Danish international made 101 appearances for Derby scoring 10 goals. He joined the Rams from FC Copenhagen and also had a spell at Italian side Udinese.
Bisgaard made eight appearances for Denmark, scoring on one occasion. He now works as a commentator and pundit on Danish TV.

Hide AdMidfielder: Tom Huddlestone


A name that will be very familiar to many fans of English football, Tom Huddlestone had a very successful career which started at Derby.
He was given his first game aged 16 for the Rams and remained with the team for three seasons making 88 appearances. Huddlestone was then snapped up by Tottenham Hotspur where he played over 140 games.
He then moved on to Hull City where he became a key player between 2013 and 2017, after which he returned to Derby.
In his second spell with the Rams, Huddlestone made a further 79 appearances and helped the side to the Championship playoff final in 2019 under manager Frank Lampard.

Hide AdHe then returned to Hull City for a short spell and now plays for Manchester United’s U21s as a player/coach. The 36 year-old hopes to develop his career in coaching at Old Trafford.
Midfielder: Adam Bolder


Adam Bolder spent seven years at Derby County where he established himself a solid member of the first team. He made over 160 appearances and built a reputation for being tough to beat.
Bolder also played for Millwall, Burton Albion and Harrogate Town after leaving Pride Park and now plays for North Ferriby United in the seventh tier of English football aged 43.
He has also made appearances on BBC Radio Derby as an analyst and co-commentator.

Hide AdMidfielder: Inigo Idiakez


Inigo Idiakez began his career at Spanish side Real Sociedad where he made 233 appearances and scored 33 goals. He joined Derby in 2004 where he played 88 games in two years scoring 20 goals.
After leaving the Rams Idiakez played for Southampton and Queen’s Park Rangers.
Since his playing career, the Spaniard went into coaching, having worked for Leicester City, Luton Town and also Derby County as a first team coach under Nigel Pearson in 2016. He now works as an U21s coach at Premier League Aston Villa.
Midfielder: Tommy Smith


Tommy Smith played for a number of teams primarily in the Championship. He started his career at Watford before moving to Sunderland.

Hide AdSmith then joined Derby in 2004 where he played 90 games in two years scoring 20 goals.
After his spell at Derby, Smith played for Portsmouth, QPR, Cardiff and Brentford where he ended his career in 2015.
The 43 year-old has since made guest appearances on Sky Sports covering the Football League and also Channel 5’s Football League Tonight show.
Striker: Grzegorz Rasiak


Rasiak joined Derby County from his native country of Poland in 2004. He only spent one year at Pride Park scoring 18 goals in 41 games.

Hide AdThe Polish striker then moved to Spurs who snapped him up after his good season in 2004/05.
He then spent a number of years out on loan at various English clubs including Southampton, Bolton and Watford.
In 2009, he moved to Reading after which he returned to play in Poland. As well as domestic success, the striker also earnt 37 caps for his national side where he scored eight goals and made appearances at the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
Striker: Marcus Tudgay


Marcus Tudgay was somewhat of a journeyman striker in the football league. He played for Derby between 2002 and 2006 and made 92 appearances scoring 17 goals.

Hide AdAfter leaving Pride Park, Tudgay went to Sheffield Wednesday, where he had his best days. He played over 190 games scoring 48 goals for the Owls.
He’s also another to add to the list of players that have played for both Derby and Forest as he spent three years there ending in 2014.
Tudgay is now still playing, allbeit for South Normanton Athletic in the Central Midlands League, the 13th tier of English football.
