The Trotters have had a game in hand on Derby for a number of weeks, which would have given them the chance to close the gap.

However, they dropped points in a 2-2 draw against Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday night which means that they are now three points behind rather than one.

A chance on Saturday

Bolton’s dropped points means that Derby have a chance to secure their spot in the Championship this weekend against Cambridge United.

If the Rams win, Bolton would also have to win to ensure that the promotion chase goes down to the last day of the season.

Furthermore, Paul Warne’s side could secure promotion with even a draw on Saturday if Bolton lose in their match to Port Vale.

Many fans will want the season to come down to the last day as Derby will be at Pride Park which would make for a tense, yet exciting atmosphere.

However, with a good result this weekend, the final day could simply be somewhat of a promotion party for the Rams who haven’t earnt promotion since the 2007/08 season when they were promoted to the Premier League.

A milestone for the Rams and a massive achievement for Paul Warne and his squad if they can get over the line.
