Derby County man’s shock comeback vindicated with award nomination
Martyn Waghorn has been nominated for the League One player of the month
Derby County’s top scorer Martyn Waghorn has been nominated for League One player of the month in August.
The 33 year-old has made a fantastic start to his second spell at Pride Park.
In five league games, Waghorn has scored five goals including a special hat trick in a crucial away win against Peterborough United.
These five goals takes his tally for the Rams up to 35 in 129 appearances including his three years at the club in his first spell.
He rejoined the Rams after he took part in Craig Forsyth’s testimonial match during the preseason. He then began to train with Paul Warne’s squad until eventually getting offered a one year deal.
Boss Paul Warne said following that superb hat-trick: “He thoroughly deserves his hat-trick, but I’ve said many times it’s not just what he does on the pitch alone.
“It’s also all the stuff off the pitch... how he is in the dressing room, how he drives training, how he picks the young lads up. He is a real force for us.”
Waghorn is the only Ram to get nominated for the award, the other nominees include: Danny Mandroiu (Lincoln City), Carl Piergianni (Stevenage) and Charlie Wyke (Wigan Athletic).
