Big travel shake-up: Birmingham Airport one of the first to drop 100ml liquid rule
Birmingham Airport now allows liquids up to two litres through security, thanks to innovative 3D scanning technology. Edinburgh Airport made a similar move, while others like Heathrow continue to enforce the 100ml limit. Check your destination's rules before flying.
Birmingham Airport has officially scrapped the long-standing 100ml liquids rule at security, thanks to new 3D scanning technology.
Passengers can now carry liquids, gels, and pastes in containers of up to two litres, with no need to separate them into plastic bags.
The change comes 19 years after strict liquid limits were introduced in response to a foiled terror plot in 2006.
New scanners, similar to those used in medical settings, analyse the contents of bags to detect potential threats without the need for restrictions on container size.
Birmingham is one of only two UK airports approved to lift the 100ml rule so far, alongside Edinburgh.
Passengers are being reminded to check rules at their destination, as many airports — including Heathrow and Manchester — still enforce the 100ml limit.
The Department for Transport has confirmed more airports will follow as new scanners are installed. Until then, travellers should always check the latest security advice before flying.
