Kabaddi tournament 2024 returns to Derby after last year's violent outbreak

Club President Kulvinder Singh aims to ‘put Derby back on the map for the right reasons’

Kabaddi, one of India’s popular sports will be played out near Derby this weekend.

It is part of a national tournament organised by the England Kabaddi Federation, the official body in the UK tasked with championing the contact-team sport.

Accomplished players from across the country will make the journey to Leicester Road Stadium in Hinckley, one hour away from Derby city centre. 

Organisers hope it will be vastly different to last year’s match at Alvaston Derby which saw an armed fight involving guns and machetes break out on Sunday, August 20, 2023.

Two men were found guilty of involvement in a large-scale fight as per Derbyshire Police website

DerbyWorld contacted Club President Kulvinder Singh for comment about this year’s tournament.

He said: “GADG Khalsa Kabaddi club Derby will be hosting the kabaddi tournament on Sunday, August 4 at Leicester Road Stadium in Hinckley.

“The reason for the event venue change was due to security and safety concerns of both spectators and players participating in the games.

“This is a secure venue where all players, participants and spectators will be searched for weapons after last year’s events. 

“We have 20 SIA (Security Industry Authority) trained individuals who will check people and vehicles entering the grounds.

“We hope to put Derby back on the map for the right reasons where people come to enjoy the event without feeling in danger. 

“Hopefully the community comes together and proves why we all love the sport.”

Kabaddi has a rich history and is deemed by the Olympics to be a ‘spectacular’ sport.

Time: 10am - 5pm (end time is approximate)

Tickets: £15 per person which can be purchased on the door

In addition to paid food being available, Derby Sikh temples will also provide free food from 2pm.
