Christmas 2024: Festive season in Derby is the best yet with lights and artisan markets

Christmas in Derby has never been so upbeat and busy.
Especially with three of the city’s key events - Sadler Gate Night Market, Christmas Lights Switch On and Artisans Uncovered -all occurring in the same week.
Festive Derby events which include Cathedral Quarter ice rink, snow globe and Nordic Tipi Bar just add to the sense of merriment.

Hide AdIt is lovely to see Derby bustling and vibrant. I was visiting on the night of the Christmas lights switch on, and I can honestly say that I don’t think I have seen Derby this busy.
There was a real buzz and it made me proud to be living here.
Derby isn't perfect, no place is, however local businesses are working hard to make the city a fabulous space and their efforts should be applauded.
Firstly, Sadler Gate Night Market is one of the city’s magical events that took place on Thursday November 28, 2024.

Secondly, it was the big Christmas Lights Switch On and Festive Derby opening on Saturday November 30.
Festivities saw crowds of all ages - there were plenty of families too - enjoy live bands and an epic lantern parade through the city.
Last but definitely not the least, Artisans Uncovered at the Old Library in Wardwick took place on the weekend of the big switch on.

The best part? They entice shoppers with free admission and a six-hours-long exciting shopping experience.
Market Square in Derby has a great energy about it, but it is not by accident. It is by careful design, thanks to city partners including Visit Derby, Cathedral Quarter Business Improvement District and Penguin PR who continue to shout out about all Derby has to offer.
Did you know that the city also plays host to what is thought to be the UK’s largest light-up Santa?

Hide AdIt may not be your favourite part of Derby, and that is OK, but when I passed it, it certainly made me look twice… and put a smile on my face in the process.
I know Christmas lights in Derby and the wider UK can attract mixed feelings.
Reflecting on media coverage Derby has received this year alone - which has been a real mixed bag - I can safely say that we are ending 2024 on a high. The only way is up.
