The challenge was based on a 5k walk on the longest night of the year.

However with adverse weather conditions, some walks may have been postponed, so do check before you venture out.

The aim of Walk For Children is to raise vital funds for the NSPCC and its indispensable Childline service, ensuring that counsellors are available to answer life changing calls throughout the festive period, including Christmas Day.

Posting on their social media page, NSPCC sent a good luck message to all supporters.

Robert Neff, Partner and General Manager at Mercia Marina, said: “This will be the third year that Mercia Marina will be lighting up green in support of the NSPCC’s Christmas campaign.

“It is great to know that we’ll be joining other local landmarks in the East Midlands and across the country to help remind children and young people that there is help available, even on the darkest night of the year.”

An NSPCC spokesperson added: “The charity urges the public to rally friends and family, encouraging them to participate in the Walk for Children in Derbyshire.”

People can participate by fundraising for NSPCC, or help raise awareness by sharing images with the hashtag #WalkforChildren if they pass a lit up landmark.
