Major changes at Derby Market Hall: Council announce new hours, late night openings and 'Quiet Hours'

Derby Market Hall is altering its opening hours, closing for one day and extending Sunday hours

Derby Market Hall has announced new hours of operation that start from next week.

It is adjusting operating hours to ‘better meet the needs of customers and support its independent traders’.

Starting from Monday, September 22, the Market Hall will close on Mondays and extend its hours on Sundays.

Sunday opening hours will now be 10am until 6pm, effective from Sunday 28 September - a move which is said to be down to the weekends being a popular time. The current Sunday hours are 11am until 3pm.

The council say the decision has been made after ‘carefully monitoring footfall and gathering feedback from both the public and market vendors’.

The council goes on to add that ‘changes are designed to create a more vibrant and sustainable experience for everyone’.

The iconic Market Hall reopened in May after a £35.1 million restoration, creating a vibrant hub that brings together the region's best independent shops, eateries, bars, and entertainment all under one beautiful roof.

Derby Market Hall’s new opening hours

  • Monday: Closed
  • Tuesday: 8am – 3pm
  • Wednesday: 8am – 3pm
  • Thursday: 8am – 10pm
  • Friday: 8am – 10pm
  • Saturday: 8am – 10pm
  • Sunday: 10am – 6pm

Another major change is the introduction of ‘Quiet Hours’.

The council said: ‘To ensure the Market Hall is a welcoming environment for everyone, Quiet Hours will be introduced every Wednesday and Saturday from 9am –10am. During this time, music will be turned off and announcement volumes will be reduced to create a calmer environment for customers with sensory sensitivities or those who prefer a quieter shopping experience’.

Councillor Nadine Peatfield, Leader of Derby City Council and Cabinet Member for City Centre, Regeneration, Strategy and Policy, said: “We've listened to our customers and traders, and have decided to alter Derby Market Hall’s opening hours slightly.

“Mondays are typically on the quieter side, while visitors enjoying a Sunday afternoon at the Market Hall aren’t ready to leave at 3pm.

“It’s also really important to us that the Market Hall works for our brilliant independent traders. Many of them are small operations, and opening seven days a week isn’t always feasible.

“Closing on Mondays allows them to manage their business and maintain consistent opening times for customers while hopefully having some well-deserved time off.

“The transformation of the Market Hall was a huge landmark for the city centre, and we are proactively monitoring how things are going in these early days to make any changes needed to ensure its long-term success.

“We’re always looking for ways to improve and, as part of our commitment to accessibility, we’re excited to introduce ‘Quiet Hours’ to make sure all visitors feel comfortable.”

Derby Market Hall is gearing up for a new season of events, including Osnabrück Oktoberfest, Derby Feste, Halloween fun and a new monthly student night.
