“But it’s not the end of the road. In fact, for thousands of students each year, it’s the start of something even better.

“With the following approach and a clear head, clearing can be a powerful way to find a course and university that’s a better fit for your goals.”

Experts reveal the clearing day tips all students need to know.

A-level results day and Clearing tips from experts

1. Get clearing day ready ahead of time: “It’s not just about waking up early, it’s about knowing what to do or say if your results aren’t exactly what you expected. Keep your UCAS login, Clearing number, exam results, and personal statement to hand, as being organised will make all the difference.”

2. Seek guidance early: “Talk to your school or career adviser ahead of time. They can guide you through alternative subjects or course options you might not have considered. If you’re applying independently, UCAS offers helpful resources to walk you through the process.”

3. Use Clearing Plus smartly: “UCAS’s official vacancy list is your best resource. Check it regularly and explore wider options - joint honours or different subjects may still be available. The tool can also match you to tailored course options that fit your profile.”

4. Ask universities if they’ll hold your place: "You don’t always need to commit on the spot. Some universities will give you a few hours to decide, but only if you ask. That breathing room can be crucial."

5. Avoid the biggest Clearing myth: You’re locked in: “You can release yourself into Clearing even if you have a confirmed place elsewhere, using the 'self-release' tool on UCAS. Students often feel stuck with a firm choice they’re no longer excited about, but you’re not trapped."

6. Follow universities on social media: "Some universities post live updates or last-minute course changes via social media. Instagram Stories or TikTok Lives can be surprisingly helpful”.

7. Do it yourself, don’t let parents call: "Admissions teams want to hear directly from you. It’s your future, and your enthusiasm counts."

8. Re-check for any unconditional offers you may have received: "In the run-up to results day, some universities may have made you an unconditional offer. Go back and double-check your emails, UCAS Hub, or any direct messages from universities. An unconditional offer can be a great fallback, just make sure it’s still a course and place you're happy with."

Herman added: “It’s important to remember that clearing isn’t a failure, it’s a chance to find something that genuinely suits you. Be calm, be ready, and stay open to new possibilities.
