New coffee shop championing ‘community focus’ opens at former jeans store in Derby city centre
The coffee house is already a hit with locals who can’t get enough of artisan beverages, homemade cakes and more
A new coffee shop has opened in Derby city centre that aims to be a ‘focal community spot’ serving a range of beverages including ice cream milkshakes, sandwiches and more.
Nixon’s Coffee is ready to welcome coffee fans on Abbey Street at the former site of of a jeans store - also called Nixon’s.
Jai Sandhu, from Littleover is the brains behind Derby’s newest coffee shop.
His noble reasons behind the coffee shop opening put the community firmly at the centre of the lean, mean coffee machine operation.
He said: “I wanted to give this area of Derby city centre something positive, something to be proud of.
“For many years this side of town has suffered a state of disrepair, there are some very good businesses in existence here which have stood the test of time.”
It is the first coffee house in the Abbey Street area.
Reflecting on providing a service for the community, Jai said: “In this densely residential area, there had been nowhere for people to come to sit and enjoy themselves with a good cup of coffee.
“This is very much a community coffee shop that also pays tribute to the former business that used to trade out of here, for three generations, Nixon’s Jeans.”
Praising Derby’s rich business heritage, Jai said: “We wanted to use the Nixon’s backstory as a foundation to build the coffee shop on.”
It seems to be a labour of love for the business owner passionate about providing a stellar coffee experience for locals.
Jai said: “We have taken great care to source coffee which you can’t naturally find elsewhere in commercial trades.
“We have a variety of coffee, 14 different types of specialty tea sourced from across the world, plus homemade sandwiches, cakes and more.”
Jai is keen to listen to the community and adapt to their tastes and needs.
He said: “We have already made some menu adjustments following feedback from locals.”
After a listening exercise, the coffee shop have now added jacket potatoes as one of their lunch offerings after multiple customers requested this.
Jai hopes the coffee shop experience he provides at Nixon’s Coffee will “create a place for belonging” for locals and visitors from further afield.
Nixon’s Coffee is open now at 1-7 Abbey Street, Derby DE22 3SJ
