What Derbyshire locals really think about £35million Derby Market Hall revamp

Derby’s revamped Market Hall is drawing mixed reactions from locals, but is it worth the £35m investment? Find out what residents really think.

Derby’s historic Market Hall has undergone a £35 million transformation officially opening on May 24, 2025.

Designed to breathe new life into the city’s retail and social scene, the revamped space promises a modern shopping experience while preserving its rich heritage.

Excitement has been building with residents and intrigued tourists eager to see what the revamped Market Hall in Derby has to offer.

While some visitors have welcomed changes, praising the improved layout and fresh atmosphere, others remain uncertain about whether it will truly revitalise Derby’s retail scene.

But how do locals feel about the new Market Hall? We hit the streets to find out what Derby residents think about this multi-million-pound makeover

Victoria, 50, a visitor, said: “It doesn’t look like it’s had that much spent on it. It looked a lot better before. It looks as if it’s got no character.”

Others, like Martin, 91, felt the refurbishment reflects evolving market trends. “It’s different and more up to date now with the trends of markets around the world,” he said.

Retailers within the Market Hall expressed mixed views on the changes.

Annie, 59, who runs Mardy Ducks, believes the redevelopment will be beneficial for the city.

“I think it’s money well spent for Derby, and I’m sure it will bring a lot more interest,” she said.

“People have to bear in mind that it’s a very old building, it’s a Grade II listed building.

“Doing a building up like this is always going to cost an awful lot of money.

“We love being here, and we’re doing fine”.

Yet concerns persist about empty retail units, affecting footfall.

Dianne, 60, who works at Spirit Crystal, noted that some stalls remain vacant.

“Until we have these units full, customers will be a little bit disappointed,” she said.

“Obviously, the first week was fantastic with music and a DJ.

“But now that kids are back at school, some of the units are empty.”

David, 51, said: “I think it was money well spent. Renovating places like this doesn’t come cheap.

“For myself, I think it’s a nice mix. You’ve got traditional stalls like the butchers and bakers alongside the food court, which has definitely boosted footfall.

“We can all look back and enjoy memories of the past, but the world moves along and markets have to change”.

With traders settling in and footfall gradually increasing, the true test lies ahead as to whether the Market Hall can establish itself as a thriving hub for local businesses and shoppers alike.

As the city watches its progress, one thing is certain: the conversation around Derby’s Market Hall is far from over.
