It can be a daunting wait, so we contacted University of Derby to see if it could share advice about Clearing, and positive news about what is so great about the city that makes it so attractive to students.

Clearing at The University of Derby

The University of Derby is expecting a busy day on campus and on its Clearing hotline on results day. It is hosting a series of Open House events throughout August, the first of which is being held tomorrow (August 15, 2024).

There will be a chance to visit teaching sites that are filled with industry-standard facilities, speak to the student services and admissions teams, and tour the award-winning halls of residence.

Hannah Wright, Associate Director Student Journey at the University of Derby said: “Whether you’re looking for a university place or considering a change of direction through Clearing, coming to see our campus in person is the best way to get a sense of whether Derby is right for you.

“Staff and students will be on hand to help visitors make the most of their visit and will be able to answer any questions about the courses we have, and student life in Derby.

“There’s no need to book and there will be free parking and light refreshments available, too.

“The Open House events will be informal drop-in sessions and in order to maximise time on campus, we recommend arriving one hour before the advertised finish time to make the most of the day.”

The sessions will be as follows, and visitors can turn up at any point within the scheduled times:

  • Thursday 15 August: 10am – 6pm

  • Friday 16 August (Derby and Chesterfield): 10am – 4pm

  • Saturday 17 August: 10am – 2pm

  • Sunday 18 August: 12pm – 2pm

  • Monday 19 August: 10am – 2pm

  • Saturday 24 August: 10am – 2pm

Hannah added: “We’re looking forward to opening our doors and hope that visitors are inspired by the wealth of opportunities available at the University of Derby.”

The University of Derby is ranked Top 5 for Course Quality and Top 5 for Employability in the Uni Compare Student Review Rankings 2025, and Top 20 in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2024.

It was also awarded Gold in the prestigious Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) 2023 – making it one of the top universities in the country recognised for its outstanding student experience and student outcomes.

‘Derby students can look forward to vibrant, diverse city’

Hannah shared what makes Derby a top place to live and study.

She said: “Derby is a vibrant and diverse city with fantastic history and many places to have fun and unwind.

“Our city is also recognised as a Purple Flag City, meaning we are recognised as a safe city, meeting the five core standards needed to be seen as excellent in managing the evening and night-time economy.

“There is something for everyone here in Derby, whether you’re an adventure seeker, sports enthusiast or theatre buff.

“A short bus or car journey takes you to the heart of the Peak District where you can immerse yourself in the great outdoors, fresh air and soak up the stunning landscape, and the city boasts a range of High Street stores and boutiques, restaurants and independent coffee shops.

“As the only university in the city and county, we’re proud of Derby’s community spirit and array of events such as Derby Feste, Y Not Festival and Chatsworth House Christmas Markets.

“We are home of pudding (the Bakewell kind), oatcakes and Stilton, and so we’re certainly not short of good food. With options to suit every taste and budget, from gin and rum to cider and sausages, there’s something on the menu for everyone this summer in Derbyshire.”
